Our Friends

IN MEMORIAM

Roger Johnson

UPDATE
Our dear friend, Roger, passed away on May 15, 2003. He will be missed by all the people whose lives he touched. Heaven has a special new angel.

A note from Roger .

My name is Roger Johnson. I have Cystic Fibrosis, a lung disease. Me and my mom have been going and buying fruit for awhile from Bob and Carol. I remember going over to the Orchard years ago and Carol would always save me a big peach or apple and till this day she still does that.

We love the fruit from their Orchard. My mom has bought a lot of peaches and canned them this year. Every time we go over there we are treated with respect, and that is what makes Bob and Carol so special to me and my mom.

If anybody needs a good apple, peach, grapes, nectarines, pears, or even apple cider (The best around) Crow Mountain Orchard is the place to go to, trust me you will be satisfied with their fruit, it is the best fruit around.

"Thanks Bob and Carol for making me feel special"

Love, Roger Johnson

From Bob and Carol
Roger was a brave young man we always lookedd forward to seeing several times each season. We were proud of him when he graduated from high school, and he brought joy to those of us lucky enough to know him. He was very special to us.

Here is a picture that appeared in the Daily Sentinel on August 13, 1991. The caption read:

"BAMA PEACH -- Ray Tipton of Scottsboro displays a whopping 20-ounce peach grown at Crow Mountain Orchard atop Cumberland Mountain."

Ray passed away in 1993. He was a dear friend to Bob and Carol and is still greatly missed. He was always happy to lend a helping hand, loved to debate and argue (Well, he was an attorney!), and his sense of humor would often get him in trouble. He would do almost anything to get a rise out of Carol including tracking his dirty boots into her house. She believes that since Ray got there, heaven is probably tracked up with cow manure and he is chuckling about it.

Dr. Helmut Hoelzer

1912 to 1996

Crow Mountain Orchard is proud to have counted among its longtime customers Dr. and Mrs. Hoelzer from Huntsville, Alabama. Although Dr. Hoelzer has passed away, Mrs. Hoelzer continues to use Crow Mountain fruit to bake delicious pastries which she shares with lucky friends and family.

Helmut Hoelzer was one of the original German rocket scientists responsible for the success of the United States' early space program. Dr. Hoelzer was born in Bad Liebenstein, Germany, on February 27, 1912. He received his BS, MS, and Ph.D.

in mathematics and natural sciences from the Institute of Technology in Darmstadt, Germany. From 1939-1960 Dr. Hoelzer worked with Wernher von Braun on rocket development in Germany and later in the United States. (Von Braun was featured recently in the film October Skies.)

In 1960, Dr. Hoelzer joined NASA's newly formed Marshall Space Flight Center and worked on the Saturn launch vehicle development programs and the Skylab program. Visitors to Huntsville's Space Center will find many examples of Dr. Hoelzer's work in guidance systems. He was also one of the earliest pioneers in electronic computers.

"In a small, makeshift lab, accessible only through Hoelzer's office, he and an associate worked in defiance of chief rocket scientist von Braun. 'Quit playing with electronic toys,' von Braun had ordered Hoelzer. 'Concentrate on your job.' But even von Braun was soon impressed by Hoelzer's 1941 creation; the world's first, fully electronic analog computer." —The Huntsville Times, August 5, 1993

Bob and Carol's daughter, Shirley Kanode along with her husband and daughter, Irv and Jennifer, count meeting Dr. Hoelzer among their most enjoyable experiences. On a trip from their home in Tempe, Arizona, they had the opportunity to tour the Huntsville Space Center with the best guide possible--Dr. Helmut Hoelzer! Irv Kanode, whose career is in the computer industry, was honored to hear Dr. Hoelzer relate first hand the history of space rockets and computers. They also later got to sample Mrs. Hoelzer's pastry made with apples from Crow Mountain Orchard.

Helmut Hoelzer was a true hero and pioneer who we are proud to have called friend.
